far away from Mardi Gras

Ah, NOLA my love, how I miss you today.
It's the type of gray, lukewarm Leeds day that makes one think the whole city is hungover and should've stayed in bed.
Many miles and an ocean away, some Good Friends are sleeping off Lundi Gras' Hurricanes and Hand Grenades and Mudslides and Screaming Orgasms. In mere hours they will be lined up four to twelve deep along St Charles Avenue and Canal Street, calling like half-starved sailors begging for saltines for the beautiful sirens riding the floats to zing plastic beads down upon their outstretched hands and naked cheeks. Purple, green and gold decorations scream out from the houses along the route and from the costumes of the spectators. All is a whirl of clashing color. This beautiful chaos will be punctuated by racous music from the parades, from curbside restaurants and bars and from improvisational bands of roaving street musicians. The sound is the aftermath of Babel's tower falling, when the common language which was no more could still be heard in music. And your musk, my lovely lady, on this holiest of days... unmistakable. Boiling crawfish and sunstroke and sweat. Jambalaya and beer and barbecue. Soon all is bathed in sweat and song and the pungent evidence of not-enough Port-a-lets.
Would that I were there, my dear, united once again with those other adopted children of yours; pinching tails in orgiastic frenzy while in the distance the muddy river rolls sluggishly by, carrying the sweet and tang of our joyful abandon out to sea.

![[User Picture]](http://l-userpic.livejournal.com/73965001/4246869) sorry you are stuck in 'hangover land' of england with its dreary muck. cheer up doll, there is always next year. i'm just jealous that you have lived there and been to mardi gras...it's one of my dream things to do and places to see.
![[User Picture]](http://l-userpic.livejournal.com/58279027/10148649) Mardi Gras..... It's DEFINITELY an experience and a half! You really should go. >^,,^< // |
![[User Picture]](http://l-userpic.livejournal.com/52201951/5804481) Your evocation of the carnival is beautiful. I really long for it now and I've never even been there. (Been to English events, but in comparison to this, calling them carnivals is somehow distasteful).
![[User Picture]](http://l-userpic.livejournal.com/51409526/10148649) Thanks --- I'm "famous" from it now, too. See the first comment to my post. Today CBS News, tomorrow the world! teehee... just kidding, really. Mardi Gras is feckin' wonderful! My friends in the States who got to go this year are still recovering, but if they post any interesting photos I'll Cc 'em to my LJ for everyone's whistful viewing pleasure. Ta, >^,,^< // |
![[User Picture]](http://l-userpic.livejournal.com/44317091/4227411) Mmm... Mardi Gras... You even mentioned the Port-a-lets! Funny, Ninja saw one and yelled "Doc WHO! Doc WHOOOO!!" Now we have to find one and paint it up proper. Iron Monkey's got it figured out how to recreate the noise the Tardis makes when you open the door. Oh, and you'll have beads in the mail sometime soon:)
